Thoracic surgery ASCs perform procedures on the chest, lungs, and esophagus. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has enabled select thoracic procedures to be performed in outpatient settings.

Common Procedures

BronchoscopyA thin scope passed through the airway examines the trachea and lungs, and can take tissue samples. Used to investigate persistent cough, abnormal imaging, or suspected infection when other testing has been inconclusive.MediastinoscopyA scope inserted through a small incision at the base of the neck samples lymph nodes in the space between the lungs. Most often used to determine whether lung cancer has spread, which directly guides treatment planning.VATS ProceduresVideo-assisted thoracoscopic surgery treats the lungs and chest through small incisions using a camera, rather than spreading the ribs. Recovery is considerably faster and less painful than traditional open chest surgery.Lung BiopsyA tissue sample is taken from the lung to determine whether an abnormal area seen on imaging is cancer, infection, or scarring. The approach — needle, scope, or surgical — depends on the location of the target.EsophagoscopyA scope examines the esophagus specifically, to evaluate swallowing difficulty, narrowing, or persistent reflux damage. Narrowed areas can often be stretched during the same procedure.Pleural ProceduresTreats the space between the lung and chest wall, most often draining fluid or air that is preventing the lung from expanding fully. Draining a large collection frequently brings immediate relief of breathlessness.
