Most of us know that looks can be deceiving. We also know that it's what's on the inside that counts. Don't let the outside of Sand Lake Surgery Center, or their waiting area, fool you. Top notch care from arrival to departure! Front desk (Forgive my not recalling your first name. Starts with a L), Kim, my R.N., Eva, R.N., Pedro, R.N., "Double Knot" R.N. Sylvia, Dr. Patel, my anesthologist, her assistant, Thomas, and to my super surgeon, Dr. Travis Van Dyke. Kudos and my sincere gratitude to all of you! My surgery took place on February 11th. Follow up call from "Double Knot" R.N. Sylvia took place the day afterward. Every person was outstanding. Blessings.
The surgery itself went fine. However the billing department is an absolutely nightmare and incredibly predatory. I have contacted the BBB of Florida for further assistance. For awhile I have been complacent about this but every time I look at the bill it frustrates me even more with the scam that took place regarding my initial estimate. I received a surgery at the sand lake surgery center on 6/11/25. Prior to the surgery they provided me with a good faith estimate of $465.44. That was due on the day of the surgery. I paid that as well as $500 to my doctor who was performing the surgery which was a separate charge. They said I was good to go and nothing more was due. Two months later on 8/5/25 the surgery center sent me another bill for $614.95. There was no explanation as to why they sent me this bill and why it was more than double what the good faith estimate was. I was also sent a bill from the anesthesiologist for $375.28. None of these additional costs was explained to me prior to the surgery. I am only 23 years old at the time and am very unfamiliar with medical expenses and how medical insurance works. I feel like my inexperience with this and age was taken advantage of to low ball an estimate for me to agree to have the surgery and then trap me after with major bills. Due to financial circumstances, I have been making very small payments every 30 ish days to avoid being sent to collections per their bill policy as this financial burden came out of nowhere and I feel like this was a very sneaky move from the surgery center to extradite money from me. Their very first initial estimate was $779.04, then reduced to $465.44 when I questioned them on it, and 2 months after the surgery another $614.95 was due plus the $375.28 from the anesthesiologist that I didn’t even know was an additional cost. This is an example of extremely poor estimating on behalf of the surgery center and leads me to believe I’m not the first person this has been done to.
I just wanted to share something frustrating. I had a procedure at a clinic on December 12, and a few days ago, I got a threatening call saying I owed $1300 and had to pay immediately or they'd send me to collections. I checked with the clinic, and they had no record of any bill. Turns out, the anesthesia group, which split from the clinic, did have a bill but only for $360. They also threatened collections and tried to collect before insurance paid. I really liked the clinic, but after this mess, I’m looking for a new doctor that doesn’t harass patients. Crazy, right?
My surgery went well. Their billing team is absolutely horrendous. They run their office extremely unprofessional. I will not schedule another surgery here ever.. I have been trying to get a hold of someone in their billing office for over two months and no one will return my call. I left a message on the billing site. They didn’t respond they just closed the case…. I’ve paid a portion now they are still demanding the original payment amount and not showing my payments
I had an extremely positive experience at Sand Lake Surgery Center. All of the administrative as well as clinical staff were extremely kind, professional and competent. It was refreshing to check in at a medical facility and have even the front desk person cheerful (mind you very early in the morning) and informative. The clinical staff worked extremely well together and I was very impressed with the lead anesthesiologist and the nurse anesthetist. They could tell I was nervous and put all my fears at ease. I felt comfortable and cared for by each person involved in my procedure. My husband and I really liked how they went through all of the post op directives very carefully while I was in recovery as well. My only suggestion for improvement is with the aesthetics in the waiting area of the facility. This center is in an older building and needs a bit of a "facelift". It would help give the surgery center more professional credibility and a positive first impression when patients walk through the door.
