I just had an unfortunate DC post miscarriage procedure. Everyone was kind and compassionate. Nurse Sally who did all pre-op, Dr Lindsay Oppenheimer anesthesiologist and of course one and only Dr Donnelly. The preop was very smooth and comfortable. I do agree with other comments that you are kind of rushed out the door the moment you open your eyes. For me it was ok as I was definitely able to get dressed but o can see how this could have been improved- being through IVF procedures under anaesthesia where you are allowed to rest under hot blanket is way nicer experience. Definitely a note for whoever manages this facility.
I had a procedure done on Nov 3rd. Jessica, the phone operator, was SUPER HELPFUL on confirming the details day of. Nurse Rita, the pre op nurse, was so compassionate and eased my nerves since my husband wasn't allowed back with me. She was really nice The anesthesiologist Dr.P needs to work on her bedside manner. There was a lack of eye contact and I felt I was doing all the talking. She was also not in the room when I walked in and laid on the bed. I was strapped down and no one talked to me abt what was happening or what yo expect. The general anesthesia meds via IV burned like hell. Post op was a NIGHTMARE. I have dysautonomia(rando drops in Blood pressure) and pain is a trigger. The doc told my husband we could leave in 40 min to an hour. The nurse (not Rita), I think Cathy? kept trying to wake me up and get me out when I was in EXTRAORDINARY pain. I kept telling her to read my file and listen, but she and another nurse kept 'threatening' to send me to the hospital like a teacher threatens to call home. I was crying- like a toddler yelling for my husband and that it hurt. Finally, someone made the call to bring my husband back. They literally kicked us out. Maybe they think patients won't remember, but I did. While overhead costs are cheaper- there's less compassion at this outpatient facility . I love my OBGYN. But post op nurses need to be more compassionate when patients are in a vulnerable state.
I had a wonderful experience at this center for my hysteroscopy. I arrived an hour early as requested but was taken back almost immediately. Emily was kind and patient during the prep process and Kimberly addressed my anesthesia concerns. Recovery was quick but I in no way felt rushed (however I was ready to go home so I didn’t stay in recovery long after waking up). Compared to some of the other surgery centers near Atlanta, I would easily go here again if needed.
While everyone I encountered at the facility was kind and pleasant, there are some issues with their standard processes. There was a pregnancy test required before the procedure, which I understand is fairly standard before general anesthesia. However, there is no reason I can see that the surgery center cannot offer blood-based pregnancy tests or a waiver option to sign away any associated liability. After not being allowed to drink water before the surgery, I struggled to produce the requisite sample for the urine test. It got to the point where I was being warned that I would have to be catheterized on the table to obtain the sample, which just adds unnecessary stress to an already stressful situation. Fortunately, after going through an entire IV bag of saline, I was finally able just before the surgery; however, it would have saved me a lot of stress if a blood test was available or if I could have signed a waiver (seeing as I have never had sex with a man in my life, I was 1000% confident that I could not be pregnant - even if I had wanted to, the condition being treated by the surgery would have precluded it). Then, after the procedure, I woke up to my bag of clothes tossed on to the bed. I was being pushed to get dressed and out the door despite still being very much "out of it". No one asked how I was feeling or if I had any pain or offered any kind of water or saltines or anything. I kept falling back asleep while trying to get my clothes on, though I was repeatedly re-woken and encouraged to keep going. I was eventually pushed out to the car, where they gave my girlfriend some generic post-op instructions. She was frightened by how out of it I was when I got to the car. No one even told either of us how the procedure went - I guess I will find out at my post-op appointment. I imagine the rush was because the surgery center closed at 3pm (I got to the car at 3:10), but if that is the case, they should not schedule surgeries like mine as late as 2pm. Any kind of surgery, even a minor one like mine, is stressful, and the policies and procedures of this surgery center only made it more so. I know that patients reading this review probably don't have any say in where their surgery takes place, but I hope that the administration reads this and is able to make improvements and that any practices/practitioners reading this push the surgery center to do so.
Going for any kind of medical procedure is never fun. That is why it is very important to have the right people around you. Family and friends are great but for the main event the medical team that attend to you during your procedure should be top notch. My experience from beginning to end was great. I was properly informed and updated every step of the way. At my arrival, I saw nothing but pleasant faces and and heard nothing but reassuring voices. The needle insertion was my fear and even that went smoothly. My anaesthesiologist was absolutely fabulous with her multicoloured stethoscope and cap and I was comforted and comfortable from pre to post. I wish everyone had access to this. I send my thanks and would definitely recommend.
