I booked an appointment three months in advance specifically to see Dr. Chao. I chose this office only because I wanted to be seen by this particular doctor, and I waited patiently for my appointment date. When I arrived, I was told without any prior notice that I had been assigned to a different doctor because Dr. Chao “was not coming that day.” I asked the front desk why I was scheduled for Thursday if they knew she would only be in on Monday. No one could give me a clear answer. The staff simply looked at each other and avoided addressing the question. This is extremely unprofessional and shows a complete lack of respect for patients’ time and preferences. If a patient waits three months for a specific doctor, the very least the office can do is notify them in advance or reschedule properly. The front desk staff were disorganized, dismissive, and unwilling to take responsibility for the mistake. This experience made me feel that this office does whatever is convenient for them without considering the patient. If you are booking here to see a specific doctor, be aware that your appointment may be changed without notice. I would not trust this office with my care again.
My wife had her cataract surgery here about 25 years ago or so and she had an excellent experience. When I was looking for an ophthalmologist, it was obvious then that I'd come here. My first appointment went smoothly and I'm now waiting on my next appointments for my cataract surgery.
Dr. Crane is a wonderful doctor and one of the kindest doctors I have ever had. He is always friendly and very compassionate, and I definitely recommend him as a doctor to anyone. HOWEVER, my review is more about the practice in general. The procedures I get done are only scheduled at a specific day and time (every other Thursday at 2:15). I understand limiting certain procedure times, but 2:15 seems to be the busiest time for this office and every single time I have an appointment scheduled I am left waiting for NO LESS than 30 minutes, usually over an hour. I had an appointment scheduled at 2.15 a few weeks ago and I arrived at 1:50, and was not even brought into the room to see someone until around 3:30 where they put numbing cream on. I didn’t see the doctor until 4:15, so the cream was pretty much worn off by then. I totally understand the office being busy and the staff did apologize for the wait, but this was not an isolated incident, it has happened every single time I’ve been there (which has been over 10 times at this point). I do not understand why they overbook appointments and schedule these procedures for the most busiest time of the day. It is very frustrating as I have to take time out of my work day to come, and am left waiting in the waiting room every single time. Another thing about this office is although the staff I have interacted with have been kind, the billing team never answers the phone and hardly returns voicemails, same with prescriptions. I’ve given up on trying to get my prescriptions refilled because they don’t call me back. This is not a reflection on the doctors because Dr. Crane is wonderful, but I do wish they changed some of the office procedures.
DR E CRANE & Staff provided me with the most comprehensive eye exam I have had in 30 yrs I was scheduled with the Northern New Jersey Eye Institute ( NNJI) for my first ever examination by the Practice. Services and attention to detail were exemplary for my preexisting Cornea condition and annual eye exam by the Practice. At the conclusion of the exam I was presented by DR Crane with a thorough review of my “current condition” and a prescription for corrective lenses. DR Crane’s (and contributing Staff) provided me with a concise post examination review and statement describing the progression of the ocular conditions for my aging eyes. All of these conditions were conveyed to me in a congenial and empathetic manner by DR Crane. R Tempest
Outstanding Cataract Surgeon in New Jersey! I recently had cataract surgery on my left eye (October 13) with Dr. Charles J. Crane at the Northern New Jersey Eye Institute in South Orange, NJ, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! My family has been seeing Dr. Crane for decades — myself, my children, grandchildren, mother, and even my children’s spouses. Over the years, he’s helped us with everything from routine eye exams and infections to more advanced procedures like LASIK (for my son) and cataract surgery (for my brother and mother). This was my first major eye surgery, and I can’t stress enough how amazing Dr. Crane is. His calm, confident manner completely eased my nerves. He has exceptional bedside manners, and his staff is truly first-class — from the front desk to the technicians, everyone was professional, kind, and caring. The outcome has been incredible. I can literally see the difference between my eyes — my operated eye feels like I’m seeing in high definition! I no longer need to zoom in on my phone to watch my grandkids play sports — I can actually see them clearly again. I’m so grateful for Dr. Crane and his team, and I’m already looking forward to having my right eye done next month. Highly recommend!
