Worst experience of my life. had ACL reconstruction at South Shore Surgical Center in Bay Shore on 11/13/25 with Dr. Dengenis. While the surgery itself went fine, my experience with the nursing care in pre-op and recovery was awful and honestly traumatic. My pre-op nurse, Kim, struggled to place my IV, saying my “vein was rolling” while she wiggled the needle around. Blood was spraying everywhere, and I’ve never seen so much blood from a simple IV before. In recovery, I woke up disoriented from anesthesia and was yelled at for moving instead of being calmly redirected. When I said I was freezing and very nauseous, my nurse snapped that I kept kicking off the blankets and that she had already given me anti-nausea meds. I told her I was going to throw up and she just repeated herself. Another nurse caring for a different patient noticed me struggling, brought me a pail, and I immediately vomited. That was the only moment I felt truly cared for. My pain was severe and when I gave my pain score, I was told I was “wrong.” I had brought the ice machine and cuff they told me to bring, but was told I couldn’t use it because I “didn’t bring the cuff.” Later I discovered the cuff was actually on my leg the whole time, so I received no ice in recovery. I also asked if I could elevate my leg and was told no, even though I was later told elevation would have been helpful. While I was crying from pain and distress, a nurse told me, “You had a baby 17 months ago, you’re hormonal,” which felt incredibly dismissive. I also asked about my husband and was told he wasn’t on his way, then asked to provide his number while I was still groggy, even though it was already on file. I was so out of it I gave the wrong number. My recovery has been brutally painful, and my physical therapist couldn’t believe I wasn’t given ice or allowed to elevate my leg in recovery. I have been replaying this experience over and over. I would not choose this facility again because of how poorly I was treated when I was at my most vulnerable.

My son went in for an ACL surgery. He was very nervous but the nurses were great with him, especially Kaitlyn and Jenny. Dr. Montemurro is clearly an expert in his field and very professional. Dr. Martin also helped to calm my son's nerves whilst performing his procedure and spoke with him about sports etc. We were pleasantly surprised with regards to the excellent staff and the facility in general.

I’m pretty composed person but I was nervous for my procedure. But the medical staff here are all PHENOMENAL! I felt like I was in great hands every step of the way with the nurses, anesthesiologists and doctors. Everyone was super kind and made sure to address any questions/concerns I had.

Everyone was amazing. I was so nervous but Valentina was so sweet and understanding and calmed me right down. Dr Mohammed listened to every fear in regard to anesthesia and took all into consideration. My OR nurses Kaylee and Aislinn even though it's a bit hard to remember were great too in making me at ease and comfortable and my recovery nurse Kathryn M, was a joy to wake up to, so patient with my silly loopiness. Dr Bates of course did a great job and left a minimal scar. I couldn't be happier with all of them. Thank you

I just had my first surgical procedure ever yesterday at South Shore and I had such a good experience. I was really nervous but every single staff member I met from check in to discharge was amazing and kind and supportive and we even had some good laughs. I really felt at ease and that I was in good hands. My doctor was wonderful, the anesthesiologist was wonderful and all my nurses and the front desk staff were amazing. I had a great experience and would recommend to anyone. I don’t typically write reviews but it’s evident that the staff here really care about their patients and they deserve recognition for the amazing job they do.
