After they made a pretty large mistake, I was very upset. Turns out it was more of an insurance problem. The surgery center owned it and made it right. They also made sure that I was able to get rescheduled quickly.

I had surgery earlier this month at NASC, and I now better understand the frustrations expressed by other patients. On the day of my surgery, shortly after arriving at NASC, I was asked to sign multiple pages of documents—which was not feasible to meaningfully review given that I was about to go into surgery—and to pay a substantial facility fee that included a $600 deductible. When I requested a receipt, I was provided only a credit card payment receipt, without any detailed or itemized invoice. A few days after the surgery, NASC submitted a claim to my insurance company, BCBS, without disclosing that I had already paid the deductible. As a result, BCBS issued a payment to NASC that included the same $600 deductible amount. BCBS now expects me to pay an additional $600 to another service provider, under the assumption that no deductible has yet been paid to NASC. What’s more, despite having made this excessive payment on the day of my surgery, I just received an additional invoice from NASC today that does not reflect my prior payment and instead requests an additional $720. I believe NASC’s practice of requiring patients to sign multiple documents and pay significant amounts immediately prior to surgery—without allowing adequate time to review or verify the accuracy of the charges—and its failure to properly account for and disclose patient payments, resulting in duplicate and potentially excessive billing, is unethical and warrants investigation.

Had an excellent experience with all the staff and Dr's. Can't say enough. I felt safe, comfortable and really well taken care of.

Update nearly 2 months after surgery I have received multiple surprise bills. Some bigger than others; the most egregious being Austin Anesthesia Partners - where I was charged 3 times as much as I was quoted. This was after them being evasive prior to surgery, refusing to return my calls, and North Austin Surgery Center claiming that there’s nothing that they can do. That’s despite the fact that they have an exclusivity partnership with Austin Anesthesiology. While North Austin Surgery Center was mostly upfront on their cost, and have received only a couple hundred dollars in surprise costs from them - the Anesthesia surprise bill has been outrageous. Nearly 4 figures beyond what was quoted. While my doctor and procedure went well, these abstract and surprise billing practices are horrific. ** One of the best surgical teams and experiences I've had. Yes, billing can be challenging since you have to get a facility fee, the anesthesiologist fee, and your doctor/surgeon's fee - and not North Austin Surgery Center nor your doctor can collectively provide you with these numbers. However, North Austin Surgery was prompt in giving me a clear picture of my upfront out of pocket costs, however - the information for Austin Anesthesiology (their partner organization) was impossible to get and the surgery center refused to help. I was a at the point of being wheeled in for my procedure still trying to get to the bottom of what I was going to be charged. The nurses, the nurse anesthetist, and all the staff here are so warm and helpful. I felt so cared for during my procedure - both in the lead up going into the OR and when I was waking up. They even had all the nurses and doctors outside of the OR wave at me as I was wheeled in. Not one person I dealt with was a 'bad egg' and they took great care of me as I was fairly nervous about the procedure. Overall I can't recommend this center enough - and my care team: from Melani at the front desk (who worked tirelessly to track down a missing item I thought I left at the center), to the prep/recovery nurses Rachelh, Jessica, to my doctor - Dr. Wendy Cutler, to Kieth, the most personable Nurse Anesthetist ever. Stellar care experience.

I had surgery here recently, and I want to thank all the doctors/nurses/techs at North Austin Surgery Center for making me feel at ease and safe! From the front desk to the RN to the Anesthesiologist to the folks in the OR to the discharge nurse, every single person was friendly, comforting, reassuring, and kind. I was really nervous, and they all made me feel taken care of. It’s obvious this isn’t just a job for all of them, but a calling. Thank you.
