Procedures Performed

Common outpatient procedures performed at this ambulatory surgery center, based on reported specialties.

ColonoscopyA flexible camera examines the full length of the colon to screen for cancer and remove polyps before they become cancerous. Done under sedation, it typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. The bowel prep the day before is the part most patients find hardest.Upper Endoscopy (EGD)A thin camera passed through the mouth examines the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. Used to investigate persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained bleeding, or abdominal pain. Usually takes 15 to 30 minutes under sedation.Flexible SigmoidoscopyExamines the lower portion of the colon only, rather than its full length. Preparation is lighter than a full colonoscopy and sedation is sometimes unnecessary, but it cannot detect problems higher in the colon.Capsule EndoscopyYou swallow a vitamin-sized camera that photographs the small intestine as it passes through — a region that standard scopes cannot easily reach. There is no sedation and no recovery. The capsule passes naturally, and images are reviewed after the fact.ERCPCombines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat blockages in the bile and pancreatic ducts, most often gallstones stuck in a duct. Unlike a routine endoscopy, it carries a meaningful risk of pancreatitis afterward, so it is used when treatment is likely rather than for screening alone.Hemorrhoid TreatmentShrinks or removes swollen veins in the rectum and anus using rubber band ligation, injection, or surgical removal depending on severity. Banding is quick and typically requires no anesthesia; surgical removal is more effective for advanced cases but recovery is noticeably more uncomfortable.

I wanted to remind anyone who has scheduled to have a colonoscopy with M. Eric Viernes, MD to do so at your own risk. After performing my colonoscopy, giving me my report no polyps and don’t need another one for five years. He forgot to tell me that he punctured my colon ripping through my veins in my pelvic area and that if I don’t go to the ER that I would bleed to death. Thanks to google I made it to the ER and had to have their surgeon go through my groin cartelizing the bleeding veins and having to tie off a main vessel killing off a large portion of my spleen. When later I tried to ask him why he just became very defensive and tried to talk his way around what he had done. He could have just apologized for what he had done and covered my portion of the hospital cost. He can not deny what he had done. He has a scope watching every move and he obviously would have had to tell his brain to back out of the space he had punctured through. So lying about it just sounds really dumb!

Just had my colonoscopy and the doctors and staff at the Center for Endoscopy were wonderful. Everyone was so caring and thoughtful, from the receptionist who checked me in to the nurses who prepped me for the procedure. Dr. Krol was great, he explained the procedure in depth and was very kind.

Absolutely amazing experience today! The nurses were so kind and made sure I was comfortable. The only thing that really threw me off is I was completely awake during my endoscopy and colonoscopy, when in the past at in other locations I was put completely to sleep. But no worries, it was fine. I was so sedated that nothing really mattered. Would recommend to anyone!

Have had the best experiences here… Dr. Chiao is phenomenal, she’s been my doctor at this place each time. I can always be confident that I’m in the best of hands with her. I was here for a procedure yesterday; Kendall took care of me prior to the procedure and she was a delight, and Masae tended to me afterwards and her attentiveness was par excellence; thank you ladies for being so wonderful

Great overall experience! The nurses were all very helpful and kind the day of surgery and Dr. Krol took great care of me. Took me less than 3 hours to get in and out. I saved a lot of money by coming here and not the hospital. Would suggest to anyone looking to get their colon cancer screening out of the way.
