Procedures Performed

Common outpatient procedures performed at this ambulatory surgery center, based on reported specialties.

Cataract SurgeryThe clouded natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with a clear artificial one. It is one of the most common outpatient procedures performed in the country, usually takes under 30 minutes per eye, and is done under light sedation with numbing drops rather than general anesthesia.LASIK / Refractive SurgeryA laser reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, reducing dependence on glasses or contacts. The procedure itself takes minutes per eye. Vision is often noticeably better within a day, though it can take several weeks to fully stabilize.Glaucoma SurgeryCreates a new drainage path for fluid inside the eye to lower internal pressure. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve silently, so the goal is preventing further vision loss rather than restoring vision already lost. Several minimally invasive options are now performed in outpatient settings.Retinal SurgeryRepairs the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, most often for a detached or torn retina, or for bleeding related to diabetes. Timing matters — a detaching retina is treated urgently because delay increases the risk of permanent vision loss.Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)Removes excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids. When drooping upper lids block part of the visual field, the procedure is functional rather than cosmetic and is often covered by insurance if visual field testing documents the obstruction.Corneal TransplantReplaces damaged or clouded corneal tissue with donor tissue. Modern techniques often replace only the affected layer rather than the full thickness, which shortens recovery. Vision improves gradually over months, and stitches may stay in place for a year or longer.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Richard Schulze in Savannah. Within 24 hours of my cataract surgery, my vision was 20/20 — without glasses — thanks to the multifocal lens he expertly implanted. The results exceeded every expectation I had. I have truly never been so satisfied with the outcome of a surgical procedure. From the very first appointment to post-surgery care, the entire experience was outstanding. His office staff is warm, professional, and organized. The surgical team is skilled, reassuring, and attentive. And Dr. Schulze himself is knowledgeable, confident, and genuinely caring. You can immediately sense that you are in the hands of someone who takes great pride in his work and deeply values his patients. I would highly recommend Dr. Schulze to anyone needing eye surgery. If you are considering cataract surgery or lens replacement, you will not be disappointed. My only regret is not doing it sooner!

Dr Schulze did both my cataracts and my Mom's. I was terrified but there was no reason to be. I was nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, but I don't remember or felt anything. My healing was fast and my follow ups were all timely and great. I hate having to use readers (couldn't keep up with them, but my Mom was older and didn't need them after surgery), so I requested perscription readers and he abliged. I have no complaints whatsoever to his skills and staff. The office has a calming auru and they are open for all your questions and concerns. If I needed it again, I would go right back to Dr Schulze. Thanks for taking such good care of me and my late Mom.

I am very pleased with Dr. Schulze and the staff at Schulze Eye & Surgery Center. I had the PRK surgery a month ago and love being able to see without my contact lenses or glasses. They were very accommodating and helpful throughout the whole process pre and post surgery. Highly recommend going to see Dr. Schulze if you have any eye needs or concerns.

I recently had SMILE eye surgery, and I’m so happy with my results! The entire process—from consultation to recovery—was smooth, professional, and well-explained. Before the surgery, I was nervous, but my Dr. Schulze and staff made sure I felt completely comfortable. They explained what to expect, and the procedure itself was quick and painless. My vision was very blurry after the surgery. Next day I wake up for my post appointment I can see 20/20. If you’re considering Smile surgery, I highly recommend going for it. It’s truly life-changing, and the results are absolutely worth it!
